ID THEFT VICTIM STORY
Finally, I have completed all the letters and forms, made copies (250 pages), and finished my letter that I hope most retailers who have poor check verification systems in place will take to heart. Today is the day I put into the mail and send by certified mail, my proof that it was not me or my husband who wrote 45 bad checks from Suffolk to Fredricksburg, VA. to every discount retailer along this stretch of highway.
This infomation gathering has taken me 3 months to put together. Not because it was not available ( well i did have to get a replacement drivers licence which took four hours) but because as a small buisness owner, wife, homemaker, and mother of two teenage boys, there is just not enough hours in the day. That and it takes a little while to get over the fact you have been violated in a most personal way.
My story is simple, at the US Post office parking lot I was robbed of my purse which i stupidly had locked up into my SUV (there is no trunk). Someone had to be watching me, there was no way for them to see the purse by peeking in the windows. After my 45 minute phone call to the police I had to settle for a phone complaint. This type of thing just happened to often for the police to do a face to face with me. I went to government website for advice and followed all the rules. Within two hours of the theft, my personal accounts were shut down like Fort Knotts.
But there is one thing you cannot stop, and that is the attitude of many retailers when it comes to checking infomation and identity of people who commit fraud by passing bad checks. Another thing that is difficult, is in trying to talk to retailers about these checks. They just want you to send money, and if you "claim" to not writing the checks the list of verification they require to get off thier collection list would generate enough paper for a small book.
If only the retailers had done that up front, they would not be out of the thousands of dollars that has been lost to them. Please finish your section to Retailers, I was going to send each a copy of this infomation, but the web site is still under construction.
So today is the day...........:) Off to the post office I go. Now hopefully it will be only a few months until all is rectified and my husband and I can again write checks and not have the clerk behind the counter tell us the check cannot be accepted.
